Charlotte
is still in the window waiting to hear from the War
Museum in Ottawa...
She was made by Charles Laidlaw for his
daughter Connie, a student at Runnymede Collegiate in
Toronto who at the age of 16 performed for the troops
during the second world war in the all-girl troupe:
The Victory Entertainers. She was donated
to Open Door Designs by Kay Westlake who also performed
in the group. Charlotte will be added to the collection
at the National War Museum soon.
The
group, Connie Laidlaw, Kay Westlake, Phyllis Moore and
Eva Elliott performed over 300 army camp shows in Canada
and the U.S. during the war. A great piece of Canadian
history and a fabulous example of Girl Power!

Workshop
Description
This one-day workshop will introduce
participants to one of the traditional craft methods of mold
making, which has been used for centuries to produce marionettes,
hand puppets, masks etc. In this workshop, participants will
learn how to take their own sculpted form, make a mold and
lay it up with papier-mâché. Because of drying
times participants will learn the assembly process, finishing
and painting on a pre-molded form prepared by Alexander.

| You
need your vegetables....the story of Mr. Turnip... |
|
 |
| During
the early 50's Joy Laurey was offered an opportunity to
make a puppet character for a one-off television show called
"Whirligig". She made a puppet based on a vegetable,
and it was named "Mr Turnip". The pilot show proved
so successful that it went on to run for over 6 years and
Mr Turnip was one of the very first television puppets ever
to become a celebrity in his own right. Mr Turnip was so
popular in his day that there was great demand for Mr Turnip
toys, dolls, games and even toiletries such as Mr Turnip
soap. More

they are German, 19thC - most of the costumes are not
original but the carving is beautiful. Again, if anyone
knows anything about them or would like to purchase
them please let me know (I do not have them on site
so will have to arrange connection. info@opendoordesigns.ca)

RED WAGON COLLECTIVE: DONATIONS NEEDED:
fabric, wool, embroidery floss, needles, crochet hooks, old
sweaters
RED WAGON COLLECTIVE was formed in 2006 in response to our desire
to deepen our artistic, collaborative, and community-engaged
practices through residency projects that would enable us to
develop both intensive and extensive relationships in the Junction
- a rapidly changing neighbourhood in Toronto's west end. We
share a desire to work collaboratively with artists and non-artists
to create work that inspires new conversations; softens boundaries
between groups separated by age, culture, ability, and economic
status; promotes the presence of art in everyday life and contributes
to increasing public engagement in community development. The
work we create with communities is used in producing exhibitions,
public installations, and celebratory performance events. We
are currently working within the walls of the Evangeline Shelter.
